Choosing an area to stay in Tokyo, with data

Updated 2026-09-28

In Tokyo, two hotels a few minutes apart can sit in very different surroundings: one on a quiet residential lane, the other above a street of bars that stays busy until morning. SHIZUAN helps you look at those surroundings with public statistics before you book. This guide walks through the steps.

1. Start with “Where to stay”

When you open the map, the “Where to stay” view is already on. Neighborhoods glowing in lamp color meet all four default conditions:

With the defaults only a small number of neighborhoods match. Entertainment districts have many incidents per square kilometer, the quietest residential areas have few hotels, and the hotel count only includes places listed in OpenStreetMap. All three narrow the overlap.

2. Loosen the filters to fit your trip

Open “Filters & list” in the lower left. Three sliders change the conditions:

The matching areas are listed by name, never ordered by incident count. Select one to fly the map there.

3. Check a specific hotel before you book

This is the step most travelers skip. Found a hotel on a booking site? Open its location in a map app, copy either the map link or the latitude and longitude, and paste it into SHIZUAN's search box. The card for the neighborhood containing that point opens right away.

The card shows the level and figures for street incidents, residential incidents and estimated quietness, the number of places to stay nearby, and the nearest station and distance. If the hotel sits close to a neighborhood boundary, tap the adjoining ones too; the pattern across two or three blocks is often more telling than a single one.

4. Reading the numbers well

5. What the data cannot tell you

SHIZUAN summarizes whole neighborhoods. It knows nothing about a building's soundproofing, which way a room faces or how high up it is, the traffic on the street right outside, construction work, festivals, or the hotel's own service. Estimated quietness is modeled, not measured. Use the map to narrow down areas, then read recent guest reviews and the hotel's own description before deciding.

6. If you need help during your trip

These numbers are taken from the official pages linked below (checked September 2026).
